Saltaire Bells

Welcome to the website of the Bell Ringers at Saltaire United Reformed Church.

The Bellringers at Saltaire

Bell ringing is a fascinating, enjoyable, social and skilful team activity which does not require an ability to read music or, indeed, great strength. Ringing can give a lifetime of enjoyment so, whatever your age, come along and give it a try - you will be made most welcome.

If you would like to join us please get in touch with the Tower Captain whose details are on the contact page.

Practice Nights  may well be cancelled in cold weather conditions. It's not much fun up our tower when it's wintry. It's a good idea to check beforehand. Phone or text 07966 234849

FEBRUARY 2020: Storm Damage caused a partial collapse of the church ceiling. A preliminary survey warns that there is a risk of further collapse, and asbestos testing will also be required. These factors plus the inevitable repair work mean that ringing will have to be suspended for what could be a considerable period. Please keep checking this website for updates.

A double whammy hit us when the church was closed as well due to the COVID19 outbreak, so it seems unlikely that the bells will sound again for some considerable time.

NOVEMBER 2020: Thanks to Covid19 restrictions restoration work has not been able to commence until now. Estimated duration is 45 weeks, so it seems likely to be at least September 2021 before ringing will be resumed - subject of course to any Covid19 regulations.

DECEMBER 2020: During the course of repairs further problems have been identified. The extent of these is not yet known, but it seems inevitable that the prohibition of ringing will be extended beyond 2021.

FEBRUARY 2021: Work is progressing, but a long time still to go. The figures for Covid19 infections and death rates have thankfully begun to fall, so although ringing at Saltaire still seems distant we have decided to commence online ringing activity using Ringing Room. This brings the band together on a weekly basis. The outlook for ringing generally on tower bells is still uncertain, but we have begun to explore the possibility of transferring Saltaire practices to another tower should the rules be relaxed prior to our church repairs being completed.

NOVEMBER 2021: It's been a long time with very little progress to report. Latest news is that work is estimated to last until February 2022, so it looks as though ringing is unlikely to resume until March 2022. It proved not to be feasible to practise at neighbouring towers, and although some of our ringers have found some opportunities elsewhere, others will no doubt need some time to adjust once we get going again.

DECEMBER 2021: Sadly it has to be reported that early in December the decision was made to close Saltaire United Reformed Church as a place of worship, and the responsibility for the upkeep of the church and its bells rests with the URC Synod in Leeds. It is understood that the necessary repairs will still be carried out with the intention of the building being preserved and used for other purposes. No firm decisions have yet been made with respect to the future of ringing here, so further updates will be added to this site as and when the overall picture becomes clearer.

MARCH 2022: URC Synod Yorkshire confirms its plan for the church to re-open after all. The necessary repair and refurbishment work is in progress and the intention is for completion in Summer 2022. A more precise forecast cannot be given due to nature of the work and the age and complexity of the building. Ringing cannot start again until completion of the work as the tower is at the centre of work to repair storm damage and prevent further water ingress. The bells themselves are undamaged. Further progress reports will be given on this site as events continue to unfold.
